August 2009 to Present:  Association of State Floodplain ManagersGIS Contractor
  • Compared HAZUS-MH flood damage estimates to actual NFIP claims at the structure level in areas of Dane County affected by the June 2008 flooding in Wisconsin. This project produced the reports: “Structure Level Flood Damage Analysis: NFIP & HAZUS”;Technical Procedures & Issues: Importing User Defined Facilities into HAZUS”; “Comparing HAZUS Flood Loss Estimates Across Hazard Identification Methods and Building Stock Inventory Data”;
  • Presented “Comparative GIS Analysis of June 2008 Flood Damages in Dane County” at UW-Madison GIS Day Expo, November 2009.
  • Performed GIS analysis to compare floodplain boundaries from the National Flood Hazard Layer to topographic map data in support of specific ASFPM projects for the FEMA Appeals process.
  • Produced multiple maps for reports and presentations dealing with FEMA appeals, including 3D visualizations of building locations and floodplain boundaries for Bozeman, Montana.
  • Developed the “Great Lakes Coastal Oblique Photo Viewer” application, a web-based map viewer for displaying oblique photos and shoreline classification data for multiple time periods from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program.  The map viewer is constructed in HTML, CSS and Javascript using OpenLayers, GeoExt, GeoServer and PostGIS with the OpenGeo Community Suite.
  • Created the website ‘greatlakescoast.org’ for the Great Lakes Coastal Flood Mapping Program to support outreach and publicize results from the FEMA initiated coastal analysis and storm surge study.

  • Field-collected metropolitan pedestrian pathways using ArcPad and GPS then validated data using ortho-imagery and existing data in ArcGIS. Formatted data to meet database and contract specifications.

August 2003 to March 2006:  Wisconsin League of Conservation VotersGIS Specialist
  • Created maps and geographical analyses for specific policy work in order to create a non-partisan conservation majority in the Wisconsin State Senate and Assembly. Maps were used in publications and on the internet for distribution to the public, to legislative decision makers, and within the organization for planning purposes. Worked extensively with GIS data from LTSB (Legislative Technology Services Bureau) and Wisconsin DNR (Department of Natural Resources) for map production.
  • Redesigned the WLCV website including a database-driven tracking system for legislative votes on conservation issues, provided technical and GIS support to staff.

April 2001 to October 2002:  Wisconsin Dept. of Commerce, Brownfields InitiativeGIS Intern
  • Redesigned the Brownfields Location Information System (BLIS) into a customized ArcIMS online map-based query tool that located potential environmentally contaminated sites that were available for remediation and redevelopment. Learned GIS application development and desktop GIS skills.
  • Presented “Using ArcIMS as a Template for Future Specific Application Development” at EWUG (ESRI Wisconsin Users Group) Conference, November 2001.
  • BLIS named GIS Site of the Week at GIS.com, February 21, 2002.
